Anodised Aluminium: Production, Colours, and Finishes

Author:

Introduce the production, colours, and finishes of anodized aluminum.

What is anodised aluminium?
Anodised aluminium refers to an aluminium alloy that has undergone an electrolytic treatment process. This process enhances the material's durability, corrosion resistance, and aesthetic appeal. During anodising, a layer of aluminium oxide forms on the metal's surface, protecting and strengthening it while providing an excellent base for paints and adhesives to adhere to.

How is anodised aluminium made?
Before anodising, aluminium sheets are rigorously cleaned to remove oils, grease, or contaminants. The cleaned aluminium is then immersed in an electrolytic solution, typically sulphuric acid (H₂SO₄), with the aluminium acting as the anode and a cathode submerged nearby. When an electric current passes between the anode and cathode, oxygen ions are released and react with aluminium atoms to form an oxide layer on the metal's surface.

Anodised aluminium colours and finishes
Naturally, anodised aluminium has a matte silver finish. However, since the oxide layer is porous, it readily absorbs dyes, enabling a vast range of colours. This makes anodised aluminium highly versatile for various applications. For example, black is popular in the automotive industry, gold is often used for decorative purposes, and red is common in consumer goods. Other colours include blue, green, purple, yellow, orange, and grey.

In addition to colours, anodised aluminium offers diverse surface finishes, such as milled, brushed, polished, bead-blasted, and textured. Advanced painting techniques even allow for multi-coloured designs on aluminium alloys.
