  Powder coating is a technique used to coat and seal metal parts, serving as an alternative to paints and other coatings. It is commonly applied to metals like copper, brass, titanium, bronze, stainless steel, and mild steel. However, with additional preparation and if the item can endure the temperature of the curing oven, non-metallic parts such as plastic, wood, and glass can also be powder coated.

  For aluminium products, powder coating is regarded as a premium choice compared to paints. This is because powder coating comes in a wide range of colors and finishes, including matte and polished options. Moreover, it provides a more uniform coating than paints or organic coatings.

  Additionally, powder coating is more durable than traditional metal paints, as it is less prone to chipping or flaking. It offers superior resistance to corrosion, chemical damage, general wear and tear, and weather-related deterioration.

  In the case of powder-coated aluminium, dents and scratches can be easily repaired using a liquid coating that matches the original color. Powder coating typically exhibits better color consistency across batches. It also offers excellent chemical resistance to mortar and industrial-strength acidic and alkaline cleaners, without producing air pollution.

  Powder coating offers other advantages as well. For instance, it is non-flammable and non-carcinogenic, and the powder coating process is generally less harmful to the environment compared to traditional painting.

Uses Of Powder Coating

  Powder-coated items have a wide range of applications. For example, many outdoor furniture pieces, such as bike stands, benches, and bollards, are powder coated to withstand harsh outdoor conditions. Additionally, numerous aeronautic and vehicle parts are powder coated to resist high temperatures and corrosion.

  Powder-coated items can be found in various settings, from offices to homes, in applications such as chairs, tables, shelves, and even fire extinguishers.

  Appliances account for approximately one-third of all powder-coated parts, making them the largest segment of powder-coated products. Furthermore, outdoor furniture and construction also constitute a significant portion of the industry.

How To Powder Coat Metal

  Aluminium suppliers will thoroughly clean the metal of dirt and grease. Any remaining dirt can interfere with the application and curing process.

  The metal is then pre-treated to prevent chipping or corrosion once the piece is finished. A conditioner is applied to set and lock in the surface pH level. After that, a corrosion barrier is applied. The piece is then rinsed, a sealant is applied, followed by another rinse, and then it is dried in an oven and allowed to cool.

  During the application process, the powder is applied by earthing the part and then electrostatically charging the powder. Once the powder is charged, it is sprayed onto the earthed piece. The powder adheres evenly to the surface due to the static cling effect.

  To finalize the piece, it is placed into a curing oven where the heat transforms the powder into a gel. As it cures, it forms a tough and durable surface finish.
